Laser Fading Before a Cover-Up Tattoo

Laser fading lightens an old tattoo so the cover-up has more design freedom. It isn't full removal. Fading for a cover-up typically takes around 2–5 laser sessions, and sometimes only 1–2 for a small, simple black tattoo, compared with 6–12 or more to remove a tattoo completely. Your skin must be fully healed before the new tattoo, so plan for several weeks after the last session. Not every cover-up needs laser, and Gwen will tell you honestly if yours does.

Fading vs Removal

Laser Fading vs Full Tattoo Removal

Fading for a Cover-Up

The goal is to lighten the old ink enough for a new design to sit over it. Typically around 2–5 sessions. A small, simple black tattoo may fade enough in 1–2; dense or multicoloured work usually needs more.

Full Removal

The goal is clear skin. That usually takes far longer, often 6–12 sessions or more, depending on the ink, colours and age of the tattoo.

These are typical ranges. Your laser clinic confirms the number after seeing your tattoo, and the spacing between sessions is set by the clinic.

Is It Worth It?

When Is Laser Fading Worth It Before a Cover-Up?

Laser fading usually helps when:

  • the old tattoo is very dark or solid black;
  • you want a lighter, more detailed or more colourful design than dark ink allows;
  • the old tattoo is large compared with the space around it;
  • an earlier cover-up didn't work and the area is now very dense.

You often don't need it when:

  • the old tattoo is already faded or light;
  • the new design is bold and dark enough to absorb the old ink;
  • there's plenty of clear skin around a small tattoo.

Gwen tells you honestly whether fading is genuinely worth it for your tattoo, and never upsells it. See how dark tattoos are covered without laser.

Timing

How Long to Wait After Laser Before a Cover-Up

Wait until the skin is completely healed, with no redness, scabbing, blistering or tenderness left. That is usually several weeks after the last laser session, and it can be longer for some skin types. Tattooing over skin that is still recovering gives a weaker result.

Your laser clinic decides the spacing between laser sessions. Your tattoo artist decides when the skin is ready to be tattooed. Send Gwen a new photo once the tattoo has faded, because fading often changes what's possible.

What Laser Fading and a Cover-Up Cost

Laser fading is paid to the laser clinic, separately from your tattoo. Clinics usually price per session, based on the size of the tattoo. The cover-up itself is quoted individually by Gwen after the free photo assessment. See tattoo prices in Pattaya for the hourly and session rates.

Questions & Answers

Laser Fading & Cover-Ups — Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need laser before a cover-up?

Not always. Many tattoos can be covered directly with a darker, bolder design. Laser fading helps when the old ink is very dark or solid, or when you want a lighter or more detailed design. Gwen tells you honestly whether it is worth it for your tattoo.

How many laser sessions do I need before a cover-up?

Typically around 2–5 fading sessions, and sometimes only 1–2 for a small, simple black tattoo. That is far fewer than full removal, which often takes 6–12 sessions or more. Your laser clinic confirms the number after seeing the tattoo.

How long after laser can I get a cover-up tattoo?

Once the skin is completely healed, with no redness, scabbing or tenderness. That is usually several weeks after the last laser session. Your tattoo artist checks the skin before the cover-up.

Is laser fading the same as tattoo removal?

No. Fading only lightens the old tattoo enough for a cover-up, so it needs fewer sessions. Removal aims for clear skin and takes much longer.

Can I do the laser at home and the cover-up in Pattaya?

Yes. Many visitors fade the tattoo at a clinic near home, then book the cover-up in Pattaya once the skin has healed. Send Gwen a photo of the faded tattoo before your trip.

Does Gwen do laser treatments?

No. Gwen is a tattoo artist; laser fading is done by a laser clinic. She can recommend a laser clinic in Pattaya and will tell you whether fading is worth it for your tattoo.

Is laser fading included in the cover-up price?

No. The laser clinic charges separately, usually per session. Gwen quotes the cover-up individually after a free photo assessment.
