Cover-Up Specialist · Dark & Black Ink · Pattaya
Most dark and black tattoos can be covered, with the right design. Lighter colours can't hide black ink, so the new piece has to be darker and denser than the old one, usually at least 30–50% larger, and drawn so the old shapes disappear into it. Very solid black sometimes needs laser fading first. Gwen assesses every tattoo individually from a photo and tells you honestly what's possible.

Gwen's Approach
"The best possible cover-up for your existing tattoo. Every cover-up is different. The original tattoo, its darkness, placement, skin condition, and your preferred design all affect what is realistically possible. Each piece is individually assessed and designed to achieve the best possible result — rather than forcing the same solution onto every tattoo."

The Challenge
New tattoo ink doesn't cancel out the ink underneath. Both sit in the skin together, so light or bright colours placed over black let the black show through once the skin heals. That's why a dark tattoo can't simply be painted over with white, yellow or pastel tones.
Older black ink adds a second problem. Over the years it can spread and blur, so the area the new design has to hide is often bigger than the tattoo first looks. A good cover-up plans for that extra margin from the start.
Colour Over Black
Yes, but only with colours that are darker and more saturated than the ink underneath. Deep blues, greens, purples and reds can work, usually combined with black and grey shading. A well-planned cover-up puts the darkest parts of the new design over the heaviest old ink and keeps lighter colour for the clear skin around it.
White ink and very light colours won't hide a black tattoo. If you want a light or colourful design over very dark ink, laser fading first is often what makes it possible.

Common Cases
Tribal Tattoos
Bold, solid black and sharp-edged. Tribal pieces are among the most common cover-ups. They work best under dark, detailed designs such as dragons, animals or black and grey realism, where the old shapes become shadow.
Names and Lettering
Small but dense. A name usually needs a design that's comfortably larger, with texture such as petals, feathers, fur or scales to break up the letter shapes.
Old Black and Blue-Black Work
Older ink often turns blue-grey and blurs. Faded ink is usually easier to cover than fresh black, but the blur means the new design needs extra room.
Solid Black Shapes
The hardest case. The options are a darker, bolder design built around it, or laser fading first to open up lighter designs.

No. White and very light colours don't hide black ink; the black shows through once the skin heals. Light areas of a cover-up are placed over clear skin, or the old tattoo is laser-faded first.

Not always. Many dark tattoos can be covered directly with a darker, bolder design. Laser fading helps when the ink is very solid or when you want a lighter or more colourful design. Read laser fading before a cover-up.
